Here is a little about who I am and my journalism journey.
I first gained interest in journalism when I joined the Film and TV course in high school in 2016. I loved to play with cameras as I started my portrait photography business in 2014, and I wanted to learn how to edit video and use audio visual equipment. I decided to give reporting a shot, and soon found myself as the school news anchor competing at a state and national level for film and broadcast TV. I loved the fast pace environment of working on deadline and learning from the talent that surrounded me, but I mostly loved finding unique individuals who's stories I was able to creatively share.
Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, I often visit my home town, and it really impacted me to see the difference in the way that people in underserved communities live compared to the world that I grew up in in Arizona. That's when I knew that journalism was the perfect career for me. I am able to report on stories that matter and give people a voice while working with the technology I always felt called to.
Starting college as a first generation college student coming from an immigrant family, I had no doubt that I wanted to study journalism and use my bilingual skills to change people's lives through my career.
Studying at Cronkite has been an incredible experience and I keep seeing my skills improve every semester. I am currently a broadcast reporter for Cronkite News on AZPBS with a general beat and a focus on sustainability. I also volunteer for Cronkite Noticias to get some Spanish practice, and I am a correspondent for Planet Forward where I create stories that focus on sustainability solutions. I had the opportunity to intern for Arizona Horizon on Arizona PBS where I learned how to produce the daily show while editing video, creating graphics, writing digital articles, and reporting stories. I have taken many journalism courses while taking a business minor to improve my marketing skills, and I've begun some courses on public relations and digital audiences to be more well-rounded.
I'm really excited to watch my skills continue to expand, and see where my journalism career will take me.
